Everyone has a perfectionist mindset. It’s unavoidable, especially with our education system. Perfection is linked to grades, which are linked to scores, which are linked to college admissions, to jobs, etc., and so on.
My job, and my art’s job is to call perfectionism out, identify it and help people understand where it is necessary and where it is counterproductive.
Perfection is necessary when being on time for a job interview. It is counterproductive when attempting to create art for self-enjoyment and the enjoyment of others.
By telling my story of how anxiety and perfectionism ruled my life for years and ultimately cost me dearly, not only in financial terms, but in my career and family life, I hope to help others avoid my mistakes.
Making art is the way I deal with anxiety. I want my audience to see it as an inspiration to create on their own terms, but also as a reminder to themselves that they can just let go of some things and that everything will be okay.
